Today I had the good fortune (and good sense) to be at the “Millionaire Maker” Seminar hosted by a man who co-authored the “Chicken Soup” series of books. Time magazine has called the Chicken Soup series the publishing phenomenon of the century. This gentleman is also the author of the “Alladin factor” and entrepreneur in 7 different industries. The name is MVH… Mark Victor Hansen… and www.MarkVictorHansen.com extols him as the ‘America’s Ambassador of Possibility’.

Mark had an interesting thing to say straight out. As he marketer, we must tell stories. He says you must learn how to tell your story fast and frequently. Understand persuasion. It takes 7 times before a person buys once.

Another nugget… Use pictures. Show the product. Most people think in images. Do it as visual download, sound bite, or through telephone access. The future of network marketing is on the phone and internet.

Mark related the story of his recent talking assignment in Thailand where people from all over East Asia had come to celebrate the awards ceremony of a networking company. This company was selling a course that promised learning ’1500 words of English for $300′. This seminar was attended by people from Mongolia who had no concept of a plane… who got into one and spent a good 6 hours in it to get to the venue and learn… they got their passports made… many were taking their first trip outside their towns!

The significance of this vivid description was to convey the impact that the network marketing model was having around the world. The awardees drove out in their new Porches, selling a $300 English speaking product.

If you ask enough people you get the results. “All the innovations I’ve ever seen are in network marketing companies. Talk to 10 people a day. Have something they want to hear about”, says MVH.

As he was personally involved with several networking companies, Mark shared the line he used in response to the question, “what do you do?”. “I triple your income and double your time.” Saying so he would shut up. And the prospect would identify him/herself.

The opportunity Mark says is the telephone. There are 5 billion cellphones. Translations are happening on the fly. You can have a global business if you learn how to use it right. The goal he says is to be an influencer of influencers.

Resoundingly yes!

Why? How? In simplistic terms, any dream of yours would be fulfilled by one or more of 5 things: time, money, health, relationships, prayer. A balanced combination of all 5 is available in every network marketing opportunity. Now I feel no need to explain how all these 5 are embedded in network marketing opportunities. If that remains a question in your mind you haven’t understood the basics of the industry and probably need another dose of CDs or meetings to get your associations right.

So let’s look at the more complex part… and that is about developing the connection. The connection between what’s on offer and what you want. Let me start with an example.

I once met a gentleman named Doug Wead who was born the son of a church minister. He said he didn’t have any ‘silly dream’ of a house, a car or even to travel the world. In spite of that, his sponsor insisted that he dig deep and put a finger on his dream. What would he really want in life? And Doug, being an avid follower of history, concluded, “I want to have a place in history”. And he went though the motions of professional networking. Days passed. Months passed. And in a few years, Doug found himself interviewing President Nixon, dining with Ronald Reagan, accompanying Gorbachev on his US tour. He found himself a place in the Whitehouse as special advisor to 2 US Presidents. He was traveling all over the world where history was being written. Berlin. Kazakhstan, Tiananmen. He wrote biographies of great leaders. He loved to write but had only 2 books to his credit before the network marketing days. Since then he has written 26 and counting. Because he got the much needed time. He got the resources.

He developed the contacts. And of course, the money. Doug’s charitable organization funds the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa) in Kolkata. His resources support scores of AIDS affected villages in Africa. His trucks were the first to reach Tsunami victims in Indonesia. Doug is in history. Careful what you dream!

Another gentlemen I have met was the former Vice President of Citibank in Indonesia. Robert Ankasa; a man who dreamed of being a top gun in his industry and a role model. Even though he started as an ordinary middle class child who cleaned toilets in Australia to finance his post-graduate management studies, he became a guy who could focus on the ends and not be stuck on the means. And a visionary who served as inspiration for many middle class Indonesians and people the world over.

Ankasa has – through his network marketing opportunity – personally mentored about 50 families to diamond and above. His asset base is worth several hundred million dollars. And it has all developed over the last decade, of which three years he spent building a network in parallel to a high pressure bank job. And then he was free. For life. Forever. To serve as an instrument of substantial socio-economic change in Indonesia and – by example – in the rest of the world.

Ankasa tells us stories of discipline that the Indonesians are famous for. As also are the Chinese. Jim Dornan makes a special mention of him in his path-breaking book co-authored with the legendary John Maxwell, ‘Becoming a person of influence’. He says in a lighter vein, “it is not falling into a lake that will drown you… it is staying there that will”. So as we plunge into the waters we know not, it is best to keep moving. Else we become another network marketing failure statistic. And lose the opportunity to really live our dreams.

Coming back to your context, now what will keep you away from pursuing a network marketing opportunity to (seemingly tangentially) realize your dreams? 3 things: One, not having (or believing in) a mentor. Two, not having internal conviction that this is a viable strategy despite its obviousness. Or three, impatience.

While the first can be remedied by locating a mentor, the second is more tricky. It calls for a deliberate movement outside the conventional thought process and you know what… doing so brings a person ‘out-of-the-box forever! In all walks of life!! So it is definitely worth the effort and chances are this is easier than you think if you stay amongst a network marketing peer group and audaciously close to your mentor. As for the third barrier, it’s a weakness habit and successful people will do best after they break it. Like all good things network marketing is not a quick-fix solution to issues. But it is generally seen that over a five year span the achievements of a networker would far surpass those of a non-networker in all walks of life. How is that? Simply due to the networker’s focus on good habits and positive company.

My personal vision for instance is to create an army of b-quadrant high consciousness individuals who usher in a new era of abundance thinking. Now what could this possibly have to do with branding, which has been my space since 20 years? Nothing evidently… except the way thoughts and events have unfolded over time… and today I can visualize a strongly branded institution that is churning out b-quadrant entrepreneurs using a branded consciousness building processes driven by Sandeep Nath’s personal branding. Dogged by common misconceptions of well-meaning educated people, I write this article.

Network marketing is in fact a great profession to be a part of if you understand it right. The most common misconception is that “it’s about selling products.” This is as correct as it would be to say “a job is about working late”.  Generally people understand jobs and efficiency related to them. Generally people know that overtime happens only due to crisis or inefficiency. How do they know? They have been taught to WORK.

Now network marketing requires a person to learn to NETWORK. And only in crisis or inefficiency would a person be found selling products.

So what is to be learned about Networking? Lots! As much as there is to be learned about working. But the issue is, we spend 16 years in formal studies and a few more on the job to learn all that. Whereas Networking is treated as a past time. A hobby. And therefore most people get hobby type results. The income potentials are however professional. Usually as professional as movie stars or sportsmen or CEOs. And you reach them in 2 to 5 years working about 15 hours a week. So why wouldn’t you take it seriously?

One of my friends in the industry, Mark Yarnell wrote a book in the 90’s called ‘Your First Year In Network Marketing’ where he shared some interesting statistics.

The statistics show that although 95% of distributors in the network marketing industry fail, that for those of us who stick with one company for 10 years or more and actively participate in their business (meaning that they work at it at least part time), that 95% of them reach the top of the company’s pay plan.

What does the top of the compensation plan look like? It varies from company to company, but in most companies it is A LOT more than the average person with a professional degree makes on an annual basis. Here’s one online sales comp plan for instance.

So the question of the day is not whether ’network marketing is for intelligent, creative people’… instead the question of the day is ‘are you willing to treat a professional business like a business?’

There is enormous intelligence required to learn the operation of networks. There are cutting edge strategies. Dealing with people calls for creativity of the highest order… which helps develop every other aspect of one’s life. And none of this requires 16 years of formal education. It just takes a dream, shared with a team.

Are you intelligent enough to get this basic fact about network marketing?

But what am I to do? I come across these people everyday… like I did last night… who look at a bottle of supplements and exclaim, "700 bucks! I can’t afford that."

Now all of us living in the new paradigm know that this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. He can’t (and won’t) afford that. But over the next 3 months (that’s how long the supplements would last) he would get a wrong-parking ticket and wind up paying the same amount… heaven knows from where! Or he’d spend that on his cigarettes without batting an eyelid.

If you relate with such habitual or unforeseen expenses all the time, just know that the following 3 points are not my theory. They are researched facts that I have come across at many a seminar. And I have experienced them first-hand.

And the first of the facts is, "when you first consciously increase the pivot point (rough monthly average) of your expenses, the pivot point of your earnings also increases." It just follows. Money comes in and keeps coming in as long as you stay consciously aware of the step-ups of your expenses.

This is a metaphysical reality and it always works. Wealth moves in its own ways. Don’t you remember the days you survived (quite well) on an income about one-fifth of today’s? If you are not faring hugely better in lifestyle terms now, it’s probably because your money consciousness has plummeted because you have ‘got sensible’ about life. Consequently you have pulled yourself away from the universal source and depend more on the personal (ego’s) production capacity. Obviously the latter is less.

However there is a physical reality to this aspect of making more money as well. And that lies in understanding where you are spending your money. Are you spending it in a system where it will never return? Or are you spending it in a system where it could come back to you?

Expenses at a store are examples of non-returning outflows. Expenses in a network marketing environment , or financial instrument, are of the nature that return to the spender manifold. As long as you respect the rules of the system you’re spending the money in, you shall have predictable results. Put your head into it for 6 to 12 months. You shall not end up a pauper… that is guaranteed… but you just might become a whole lot wiser… and that’s for life!

The third fact, insofar as organic supplements (or any other high quality products) are concerned, is another physical reality. And this is about shifting fixed expenses by trusting the aforementioned metaphysical principle. What does this mean? It means, you buy organic supplements to consciously increase your expense pivot point. Next you use them (this is important). Now you will benefit from 6 to 12 months of continued usage. You will eliminate doctor, pharmacy and hospital bills . You will reduce that component of expenses (which would otherwise have been made in a system that wouldn’t have paid you back anyway). And you will end the year richer.

Likewise, let’s say you buy high quality detergent (with softner) from your networking business. Now on the retail price you will see you’re paying three times for it (compared with other premium brands in the market). But it is a concentrated formulation and thus will last thrice as much. Most direct-to-home products are concentrates as concentrates reduce transport & stocking cost. Moreover, since it has added softner, your clothes will last twice as much. Obviously you spend more on clothes every year than you do on detergent. So if the clothes last longer, you’ll be saving ‘pounds’.

Are you being penny wise and pound foolish? Is prevention better than cure for your family? Is a penny saved a penny earned (in the system that pays you back)? Have you forgotten all the sayings you learned in junior school? Or have you only just discovered how sensible they were… and are you now ready to apply them in your life?

During a conversation yesterday, with a couple in my network marketing business, I happened to think, “To live in the 21st century and have a network marketing opportunity in your hands is somewhat like living in the renaissance times and having a printing press.” Both opportunities – for network marketing and printing – require training to harness their potential. Both have the capacity to influence millions of people. And both need to garner social proof before the public at large adopts them in their lifestyles.

Network marketing opportunities are a little trickier than printing though because they are intangible. Unlike the printed paper that is tangible proof of a better means to communicate, network marketing is based on the intangible ‘dream’ which is not standard from person to person. And this is what brings up the challenge in belief.

I advocate network marketing meetings as the best means to acquire the belief in oneself, one’s upline team and in the network marketing business one has as well. Attending meetings is the most non-invasive means to shift one’s thinking and thus mindset and thus lifestyle. Attending a meeting every week is not uncommon in social and spiritual circles, so why not attend them when it comes to one’s own mind and personal finance? Moreover, once we agree that network marketing requires ‘training’, attending meetings is akin to attending classes, which one does without question in a business school.

The lady amidst this couple expressed a dream to run a company where she’d have lots of people out on the field marketing her designs for her. Fascinating! Having done that myself, I know the stress associated with ensuring collections from the market, timely salary payments, juggling creditors, apportioning taxes, and the works. But how can one explain this to someone who has not been through the grind of an S-quadrant business ? How does one explain the beauty of the network marketing model where each member is a volunteer, working exclusively for his dreams, doing the right things so others can follow, and thus create huge networks through which an army of volunteers moves substantial product?

Dogged with this question I ruminated over my printing press analogy again. Voila! This morning it struck! The members of network marketing teams often get obsessed with the ‘printing press’ itself, which they think of as the key thing. That’s like thinking of the ‘company’ (Amway, in my case) as the key thing. But if you look at the renaissance, what caused the revolution was not the press, but in fact the writings on the papers that could be circulated far and wide as a consequence. These ‘writings’ are our dreams. They move us to do the things we must do. In the way we must do them.

For the lady I mentioned, the Rich dad approach to business would far outweigh the Poor dad approach to fulfill the same objective (of having lots of people working to build her designing business). Instead of recruiting ‘employees’ she would learn recruiting prospective ‘business owners’, who are people with dreams and willing to work for them. What she would say to them would be the ‘writings on her papers’. And if she took upline help, she’d probably never get that part wrong. A singular message would flow through the organization so established. Like the singular message against the doctrines of the dark ages that resulted in the renaissance.

The printing press was the means then. The alternate distribution system – using network marketing opportunities – is the means now! Are you watching what’s happening or making it happen?

Direct sales opportunities are growing for individuals everyday. But because the industry is still in infancy, we often confuse the jargon. The entire spectrum of the direct-to-consumer industry is set to sweep revolutionary socio-economic change in the coming decade and we are standing at the brink of the revolution . So it does make sense to start getting clarity!

That said, I don’t take upon myself to lay down the rules or proffer definitions. For a simplistic understanding, here are fundamental explanations:

MLM: Multi-level marketing necessitates the movement of a physical product and pays out at various levels based on the total sales of a group of people. For example, if an individual has sold 1000 units of product and has recruited 2 people, each with 1000 units of stock, and they each do the same, there are 7000 units of stock moving through the group. Commissions would be issued to the 4 newest entrants based on the commission %age slab for 1000 units each. Then, for the 2 mid-tier members, commissions will accrue on a %age slab for 3000 group units. And finally, the group originator is remunerated at the 7000 unit %age slab. These tend to get pretty hefty and generally are high returns once the group achieves a critical mass. What I have described here is a ‘binary model’ but there are various strategies (matrices) designed by various companies to make their compensation models attractive.

Network Marketing: I like Jim Dornan’s philosophy which pretty much sums up the definition of network marketing. He says, “we don’t use people to build the business; we use the business to build people”. Network Marketing uses the MLM model and builds atop it leadership, empowerment and duplication. It takes MLM into the B-quadrant at a personal level and as a B-quadrant business owner a network marketers focus is not as much on product sale as it is on empowering others to align with team structure, leadership principles and network building. Contrast to MLM this method earns money slowly but does surely (and hugely); as is characteristic of any business system that is reliant on people’s initiative to learn and grow. Network marketing typically does not operate on a binary model.

Network Building: A relatively new term, network builders operate on the GPT concept of ‘getting paid today ’. This ensures quick returns through product sales and network building up to one or two tiers allows for subscription based continuing income. Like network marketing, network building calls for vision sharing, leadership development and empowerment. But as monies accrue through individual product sales, rather than group product sales, returns are controllable by individual effort. And royalties are controllable by empowerment effort.

As all these involve movement of product directly to consumers… bypassing the traditional distribution supply chain… they all fall under the umbrella of ‘Direct Sales’ and employ Direct Marketing tools such as literature, presentations, roadshows, mailers etc. Corporations have historically employed the direct sales model to sell vacuum cleaners, safety equipment, insurance, computers… the works. Now the individual consumer is getting empowered to do the same and profit from it. That’s exciting!

A common mistake is to confuse the compensation model with the business system. A system is a step-by-step methodology of operation and training and has nothing to do with the network development system set up by the manufacturer or service provider. A ‘business system ‘ is like a franchise you would take to develop your business in a paint-by-numbers fashion by following what works. McDonalds has a system to market its burgers… you too would do well to have an external system to market your opportunity within the gamut of the direct sales industry.

The interviewer had the pleasure of being on a call with him for an hour. Here are excerpts…

INT: Hey Jeff, thanks for this call. So can we say you’re a hardcore salesman?

JC: Every one is a salesperson… most don’t know it, that’s all. It’s just that as I became acutely aware of my role in salesmanship, I developed duplicatible techniques around those skills.

INT: So what’s the biggest secret in selling?

JC: Ask questions. Ask the prospect, “You must be serious about starting business, is that right?” Express your own seriousness to coach only when the conversation develops into a string of yeses. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect… it never will be. Start where you are at. Do something. Just start moving.

INT: Wow! that’s a big one. We just freeze ourselves mostly. How do you break the ice?

JC: Master the art of connecting. It is a 4-step process… One, Small talk … as ice breakers. Two, Fact finding for seeking the prospect’s background. Three Rapport building to get on a common ground. And finally, Commitment to next step so you can be leading on. Every conversation, once seen as these 4 steps at play will advance every interaction and solidify a relationship.

INT: Really! Any caveat to this?

JC: Well yes! Only 7% of what is spoken is retained. 38% retention comes from the tone with which it is said. And 55% of the energy of the dialog is what is finally retained. So it is critical to have the conversations with the right energy and tone. How often we remain searching for the right words… and how little they matter!

INT: If you have the right energy, will it still not work?

JC: Also bear in mind, everyone has a reason to NOT live their dream. They boil these reasons down to one of 5 objections:
1. Don’t have money
2. Don’t have time
3. Need to think
4. Need to check with someone
5. A very logical reason not to

These objections arise from natural fears of the unknown. Since you are leading the prospects to a better future it is your job to ask, “sure Sandeep, based on what you see, do you see an opportunity?” Unless you get a Y-E-S yes, back off. Anyone saying ‘ya’, ‘yea’, ‘yep’, ‘uh-huh’ etc has not got it. Their time will come later. Your time is precious. You have lives to change.

INT: Wonderful! So who is the ideal prospect?

JC: You are seeking what I call people with ‘Opportunity Seeking Perception’. They are self-starters. They are all over. When your OSP is active, you will connect with them. That’s when you must not be shy. Be upfront to ask, “how much income do you want to make?” “If you are serious, where can you find the money in the next 24 hours?” Remember, he says, for anyone to find a few thousand dollars is no big deal these days. Money is never an objection… what if they we to be in the hospital the next day? The money is there.

INT: This is great stuff Jeff. Any closing comments?

JC: Get rid of a self-limiting thought which says, “I don’t want to be pushy”. Every excuse is a well planned lie. Your job is to push the lies away. It’s good to be pushy towards truth. Remember attachment leads to disappointment. Never be attached to the outcome of your efforts. And you shall never be disappointed!

Everyone knows we ‘MLM guys’ are a bit weird. Especially in our ways to “attract people to MLM”. But this one takes the cake and the bakery and the baker’s wife!

What you might want to do is visit half a dozen bookstores in your area every week… and pop your cards into every copy of Cashflow Quadrant, Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Secret, Think and Grow Rich, The Science of Getting Rich, Business School, Why We Want You To Be Rich…

Who do you think reads such books? Yes, you got it! Place your cards intelligently exactly where your prospect will see them in the right frame of mind. Imagine, when she turns to the chapter on ‘Prosperity’ suddenly your card drops into her lap! Voila! She’d be thrilled. And then she would read behind the card; “Want hundreds of real ones like these by working from at home? Visit http://www.DoOnlineBusiness.com ” Do you think she would visit? My friend will tell you how hundreds like her call him excitedly every week.

Start attracting people to your MLM like never before. Hurry! The mint closes soon

The pun here is very very intentional. Where a seed of doubt exists, success retracts. It’s called self-sabotage. And it is one price we pay as we grow up.

Look at kids. They have no doubt that they will, say, walk. And so they fall any number of times and get up… and eventually walk. Why? Because they see social proof around them… everyone can walk… so they can too. Not convinced? Let’s look at a 6-year old’s desire for a bar of chocolate. He wants it and he hounds his parents, makes inane trade-offs, and eventually gets it. Not because the parents are too kind and loving… but because he knows beyond doubt that he is going to have it.

But then we grow up. And ‘see too much’. And know what cannot happen well before we realize what can. The innocent surety-beyond-doubt is looked upon as ‘naive immaturity’. Maturity is all about knowing what can’t be done. In supporting the socially-acceptable, regardless of how flawed it might be. Or how limited our view might be.

Galelio and Copernicus – among many others – lost their lives to support a wildly silly claim that the Earth was round. Till the social proof manifested better and the truth became self-evident.

I can go on with examples of posthumous greatness. But that’s not the point.

The point is about your success. Are you destined for it while alive or dead? I expect to achieve it while alive. Which (if you’ve read the page ‘About me ‘, you’ll know) is to bring network marketing mainstream as a vehicle to create a society at a higher vibratory level of consciousness.

What a network marketer encounters today (since the last 75-odd years) is not very different to what Martin Luther King, George Washington, MK Gandhi or Mao encountered… a ridiculous reception to a life-changing idea. I quote MK Gandhi’s observation about his residence (ashram) "Cranks and madmen often find their way to the ashram – and I am the maddest of them all". Now isn’t that the spirit of networkers and the way they are usually looked upon? We have only just scratched the tip of the iceberg.

You see, all the revolutions you can trace back to the gentlemen mentioned above took about a century to fructify. Fortunately the seeds of the networked economic model have been planted 75 years back and this generation is going to bear the fruit. Initially the fruit will be available to those who are today part of the movement. But 50 years hence everyone would partake of this ‘world of abundance’ which we are creating.

It takes a different education to understand this new world. Is it worth investing a few minutes today to examine it further? I can speak for myself. And I do, in a video at Arrive At Success . As for you, think about it… all you have learned till today has got you to where you are at. Is that where you expected to be? What you’d defined as success while in school?
